Hair Damage in Bali: How to Protect and Repair Your Hair

This is one of the most searched topics in Bali's beauty and wellness community. If your hair has become increasingly dull, rough, or difficult to manage since arriving in Bali, the water is almost certainly a significant factor. Bali's tap water is high in calcium, magnesium, and other minerals that deposit on the hair shaft over time, creating build-up that makes hair feel straw-like, causes colour to fade faster, and can disrupt your natural curl pattern if you have wavy or textured hair.

The good news: this is entirely fixable. Here is what is happening and what to do about it.

What Hard Water Actually Does to Your Hair

Hard water is water that contains a high concentration of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. Bali's tap water is notoriously hard, and your hair might be one of the first places it shows.

When mineral-rich water evaporates from your hair, it leaves calcium and magnesium deposits on the hair shaft. Over time, these deposits build up on the cuticle (the outermost layer of each hair strand), making the surface rough and preventing moisture from penetrating. This is why hair that once absorbed conditioner well starts to feel dry and unresponsive; the minerals are blocking the way.

For coloured hair, mineral deposits cause colour to oxidise and fade much faster. For curly and wavy hair, mineral build-up disrupts the curl pattern and makes frizz significantly worse. For all hair types, it makes the hair feel heavy, dull, and difficult to style.
